New York City has filed a lawsuit against Facebook, Google, Snapchat, TikTok, and other online platforms, alleging that these platforms are fostering social media addiction among children and worsening their mental health crises.

A 327-page complaint was filed on Wednesday in the Manhattan Federal Court against Meta Platforms, Alphabet, Snap, and ByteDance. The complaint claims that these companies have been negligent and have harmed the public interest.

The city has joined forces with other governments, school districts, and individuals in approximately 2,050 similar cases in the Federal Court of Oakland, California. The complaint states that these platforms are designed to exploit the psychology and neuroscience of young people to encourage excessive use.

The city’s schools and healthcare systems are also involved in the lawsuit. According to the complaint, 77.3% of New York City high school students spend more than three hours daily on screens, leading to sleep deprivation and increased school absenteeism.

In January 2024, the city’s Health Commissioner officially declared social media a public health risk. The complaint also highlights that taxpayers have had to bear costs in addressing these issues, and social media has contributed to risky behaviors like “subway surfing,” which has resulted in at least 16 deaths since 2023.

The city argues, “Defendants should be held accountable for their actions, as those affected are currently forced to bear the burden of solutions and associated costs.”
