Judge Colin Lawrence Sekera said, “The claim by the accused that this is politically motivated and a witch hunt has been refuted by overwhelming evidence, showing abuse of his powerful position.”
Each charge carries 15 to 20 years in prison, though the final sentence has not yet been announced. Prosecutors allege that Najib used his positions as Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and 1MDB advisory board chairman to transfer massive sums from the 1MDB fund to his personal account.
Najib was previously sentenced in 2020 to 12 years (later reduced to six) for illegally taking about $9.9 million from 1MDB in his first case. This latest case, directly related to 1MDB and involving even larger financial transactions, is considered the most significant.
Over the seven-year trial, 76 witnesses were called, including Najib himself. Judge Sekera noted evidence showing Najib’s “unbreakable connection and relationship” with fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Low, who acted as his proxy and intermediary.
Analysts say the verdict could also impact Malaysia’s political landscape. Some suggest that the stability of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition government could be affected, as Najib’s party, UMNO, remains part of the ruling coalition.
Najib’s sentencing and appeal process are still pending. Experts believe the case’s outcome will be a key test of Malaysia’s judicial system and political accountability.
