A devastating fire claimed the lives of a mother and her young daughter in Gurudaspur upazila of Natore district. Another person was rescued in critical condition with severe burn injuries. Several houses and a grocery shop were destroyed, causing extensive damage.
The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Monday (February 9) in Jhaupara village under Dharabarisha Union.
According to local sources and the fire service, Atiya Khatun (30) and her daughter Rawja Khatun were asleep inside their house when the fire broke out. Unable to escape, they were trapped and died in the blaze. Another individual was rescued from a nearby house with burn injuries.
The fire completely destroyed four houses belonging to the family and also gutted a nearby grocery shop. Twelve goats were killed in the fire. Locals estimate the total loss at around 1 to 1.2 million taka.
Upon receiving the news, a team from Gurudaspur Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control. The bodies of the deceased mother and child were later recovered and handed over to the police.
Gurudaspur Fire Service Station Officer Ataur Rahman said that preliminary investigation suggests the fire originated from an electrical short circuit. Further legal procedures are underway.
