Modi-Trump Era India Strategy: U.S.-Russia Meeting and Its Impact

New Delhi, India – The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska will draw attention not only within the two countries but also in Europe and Ukraine. However, India, nearly 10,000 kilometers away, is also closely watching the developments.

Since the Cold War, India has maintained a traditionally close relationship with Russia while simultaneously cultivating rapidly growing diplomatic and commercial ties with the United States. Relations between India and the U.S. deepened particularly during the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. This closeness largely remained intact during Trump’s first term and continued under Joe Biden.

Analysts say that Washington’s warmth toward India is primarily aimed at balancing China’s influence. As China’s economic and military presence grows in the Asia-Pacific region, the U.S. has increasingly valued India’s strategic role. India is also part of the Quad, a four-country alliance including Australia, Japan, and the United States.

However, a decade after Barack Obama described India as a “major partner,” the relationship now faces complex challenges. The Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on Indian imports, among the highest in the world. Half of these tariffs targeted India’s purchases of Russian oil, a move that encouraged India amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has temporarily waived large tariffs on China, as Washington is engaged in trade negotiations with India. This differing approach has raised questions about whether Trump’s tough stance on China, contrasted with a different treatment of traditional allies like India, signals a shift in U.S. Asia-focused policy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal rapport with Trump has also shaped this complex diplomatic context. During Trump’s first term, their close relationship was highly visible – they appeared together at multiple public events, frequently embraced, and publicly expressed friendship.

Analysts suggest that it is now time for India to adopt a new strategic approach, balancing relations with both Russia and the United States to maintain stability in Asia’s complex diplomatic environment.
