In Shariatpur, the banned Chhatra League observed the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman under the cover of night, six arrested

In Shariatpur, leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League commemorated the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at least at three locations under the cover of night. On Thursday night, several Chhatra League members wore masks while carrying out the program.

Following the incident, police conducted operations in Domsar and Bilaspur areas of the Sadar Upazila and arrested six individuals. Those detained from Domsar were Kausar Fakir (28), Mamun Khan (26), Abdul Mannan Bepari (23), and Munna Khan (25). From Bilaspur, Shamim Madbar (28) and Asad Munsi (18) were arrested.

The official verified Facebook page of Chhatra League, ‘Bangladesh Students League,’ released a video of the death anniversary event. The video shows masked Chhatra League leaders and members lighting candles in front of Bangabandhu’s portrait, offering prayers, and chanting slogans mentioning Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Local political leaders said that the last public program in Jajira before August 15 had taken place earlier. Since then, torch processions, poster placements, and other disruptive activities have continued under the cover of night.

Jajira police officer-in-charge Mainul Islam said that between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m., several Chhatra League members gathered in Munshikandi area of Bilaspur, lit candles, and chanted slogans. Police conducted a raid there, arresting two individuals while the others fled. They will face charges under the anti-terrorism law and for attacking police.

Shariatpur Police Superintendent Nazrul Islam stated, “Some individuals, in the name of the banned organization, wore masks and chanted slogans. They are being identified through video footage, and legal action will be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.”
