A new trial process has begun regarding the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona. The previous trial was annulled nearly a year ago due to ethical complications involving a judge.

The world-famous footballer died in November 2020 at the age of 60. He had been under home treatment after brain surgery. However, his death shortly after discharge from hospital raised many questions and controversies.

After Maradona’s death, seven members of his medical team were accused of medical negligence and legal proceedings were initiated. In the initial stage, long testimonies were recorded from Maradona’s children and other witnesses, but the trial was later halted midway.

Later, in May 2025, the trial was annulled. It was alleged that a judge involved had participated in a documentary related to the case, which violated judicial ethics. The judge was later removed.

In the newly restarted trial, around 120 witnesses are expected to testify. The main focus will be to determine whether doctors, psychologists, or nurses were negligent in Maradona’s death.

If proven guilty, the accused could face 8 to 25 years of imprisonment. The case has become significant worldwide, as it raises not only questions about the death of a football legend but also about accountability in medical practice.
