Main suspect in the murder of Comilla University student Sumaiya Akter and her mother, Kabiraj Mobarak Hossain, arrested

Police have arrested Mobarak Hossain, the main suspect in the murder of Comilla University student Sumaiya Akter and her mother, from the Durgapur area of Comilla city. The victims’ family reportedly had prior interactions with the kabiraj (traditional healer).

According to police sources, he was apprehended on Monday (September 8) while trying to flee from Comilla Railway Station. Authorities recovered a bottle containing water used in the murder, clothing, four stolen mobile phones, and a laptop from his possession.

Comilla Police Superintendent Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan stated that Mobarak had rendered Sumaiya and her mother unconscious for nearly three hours using water and spiritual rituals (jhar-fuk) before killing them. He strangled the mother and choked Sumaiya to death.

He further added that the exact motive behind the killings is still under investigation, and authorities are also examining whether any family members were involved.

The police plan to issue a detailed press release later in the afternoon.
