The television series ‘Lanterns’, based on DC Comics’ popular character Green Lantern, has generated significant interest among viewers since its release. Meanwhile, nearly 10 million viewers worldwide watched the series’ third episode within its first three days of release. So far, this is the highest viewership recorded for any single episode of the series. In the United States alone, around 7 million viewers watched the third episode.
However, the series had already attracted a significant audience from the beginning. The first episode was reportedly watched by more than 20 million viewers worldwide. With this success, ‘Lanterns’ has quickly secured a place among the popular series on HBO Max.
One of the key reasons behind the series’ popularity is its storytelling approach. Unlike conventional superhero series, ‘Lanterns’ does not focus solely on space missions, superhuman abilities or large-scale battles. Instead, the story revolves around a mysterious murder.
New Green Lantern John Stewart and experienced Lantern Hal Jordan begin investigating the murder in an effort to uncover its mystery. As a result, the superhero narrative has been combined with elements of a crime thriller and mystery. Those involved with the series believe this distinctive storytelling approach is helping maintain viewers’ curiosity.
In the third episode, the focus of the story shifts toward John Stewart’s past. The episode explores how he shaped himself through his family’s expectations from childhood, rigorous training and various life experiences.
John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, is not portrayed simply as a powerful superhero. His personal fears, psychological pressure, family expectations and struggle to prove his abilities are also given significant attention in the story. This has helped create a deeper emotional connection between the character and the audience.
Meanwhile, Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan brings another dimension to the story as an experienced Lantern. On one side is the younger generation represented by John Stewart, while on the other is the experienced Hal Jordan. The relationship and tension between the two characters have added further dramatic depth to the series.
Another major attraction of ‘Lanterns’ is its ensemble cast. Alongside Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, actors including Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter and Ulrich Thomsen have taken on important roles.
The story is not limited to the two main characters. The pasts of various characters, their relationships with one another and the mystery that gradually unfolds have connected each episode to the next. As a result, viewers are also becoming increasingly eager to find out what happens in the following episodes.
Another reason for the interest in ‘Lanterns’ is the new direction planned by DC Studios. Under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, efforts are underway to reshape DC’s film and television universe, and ‘Lanterns’ is considered an important part of that plan.
The involvement of creators and writers such as Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King also raised viewers’ expectations from the very beginning.
Following its release, those expectations have been reflected in the viewership figures. ‘Lanterns’ has now secured a place among the biggest series launches in HBO Max history. At the same time, it has reportedly set a new record as the biggest premiere for a DC Studios series.
Overall, ‘Lanterns’ has emerged not only as a new superhero series but also as an important test of the future direction of DC’s new television universe.
