Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) has announced the indefinite suspension of the admission test for the new batch, according to the student organization Prokousholi Adhikar Andolon KUET. On Thursday (September 18) at 11 PM, after a protest march, students hung a banner reading “Admission Test Closed” at the main gate.
Students stated that since the government has not ensured the rightful status of engineers, there is no need to create new engineers. In this context, they announced that the 24th batch of KUET will be the last batch.
The protesters mentioned that they have been conducting peaceful programs over the past six months with three sets of demands, which include:
Removing any type of promotional quota in the 9th grade,
Making the admission test mandatory and equal for all,
Recognizing a BSc degree as the minimum qualification to use the title “Engineer.”
Additionally, they demanded that in the 10th grade, both diploma holders and BSc graduates be given the opportunity to enter through an examination.
On August 27, the government had formed an investigation committee following a sit-in at Shahbagh, Dhaka. However, the students claimed that on September 17, under pressure from diploma holders, the government dissolved the previous committee and formed a new one. According to the protesters, “After being defeated in discussions, the Diploma Syndicate created a mob, and the government surrendered to that mob.”
They argued that this government decision clearly demonstrates that engineers’ rightful status is not officially recognized by the state. Therefore, the students said, there is no alternative but to announce the closure of the admission test.
