Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 made headlines after earning more than Rs 1.25 billion worldwide on its opening day. Although its box office momentum slowed somewhat on the second day, the film crossed the Rs 2 billion mark globally within just two days of release. According to preliminary figures released by box office tracker Sacnilk on October 17, the film’s total worldwide earnings over its first two days reached Rs 2.091 billion.

With this performance, the sequel has also surpassed the first two-day earnings record of Jailer, which was released in 2023. The strong audience interest surrounding the film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, and its impressive performance in international markets have played a major role in its box office success.

According to Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 953 million in net revenue in India over its first two days. Its domestic gross collection, including taxes, reached Rs 1.121 billion. Overseas markets contributed another Rs 970 million, bringing its total worldwide earnings to Rs 2.091 billion.

Jailer 2 was released in theatres on October 15. On its opening day, the film earned Rs 1.2525 billion worldwide. Of that amount, Rs 702.5 million came from the Indian market in gross collections, while overseas markets contributed Rs 550 million.

The film has emerged as one of the biggest opening-day successes in Rajinikanth’s career. However, his film Coolie remains ahead, having earned approximately Rs 1.511 billion on its first day. Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo also recorded a higher opening among Tamil films, earning around Rs 1.42 billion on its debut day.

Following its strong opening, Jailer 2 experienced a decline in its Indian box office earnings on the second day. On October 16, the film earned Rs 356 million in net collections in India. Compared with the opening-day net collection of Rs 597 million, this represented a decline of approximately 40.4 per cent.

Nevertheless, the film continued to perform well in overseas markets, helping its worldwide total cross the Rs 2 billion milestone. On the second day alone, it earned approximately Rs 400 million from international markets.

Breaking down the Indian earnings for the second day, the Tamil-language version collected Rs 252.5 million. The Telugu version earned Rs 72.5 million, the Hindi version brought in Rs 27.5 million, and the Kannada version collected Rs 3.5 million. Across all language versions, the film’s net earnings in India reached Rs 953 million over two days.

Released in 2023, the original Jailer was a major commercial success. Rajinikanth’s portrayal of Muthuvel Pandian, a retired prison officer, received an enthusiastic response from audiences. The success of that film had already generated considerable expectations for the sequel well before its release.

According to Sacnilk’s preliminary estimates, Jailer 2 earned Rs 2.091 billion worldwide in its first two days. In comparison, the original film earned approximately Rs 1.5 billion during the same period. The sequel has therefore outperformed its predecessor at the box office from the very beginning.

According to reports, Jailer 2 has also become the fastest Tamil film released in 2026 to reach worldwide gross earnings of Rs 2 billion in just two days. It is also the fourth Tamil film released this year to enter the Rs 2 billion worldwide box office club.

In the first film, Rajinikanth played Muthuvel Pandian, also known as “Tiger”, a retired prison officer. When his family came under threat, he used his old connections with the criminal underworld to fight against his adversaries.

The superstar has returned as the same character in the second instalment. Once again, he must confront new threats from the criminal underworld to protect his family and preserve his legacy. The released trailer suggests that the scale of the opposition is greater this time and the conflict more intense. However, the full details of the film’s storyline have not yet been disclosed.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film features Rajinikanth alongside Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Vidya Balan, S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vijay Sethupathi, Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Jackie Shroff, among others. The music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

Despite its box office success, the film has also attracted criticism. A review by Filmfare praised the humour in the first half, the introduction of new characters and the entertaining sequences. However, some critics expressed reservations about the screenplay in the second half and certain inconsistencies in the storyline.

Even so, the film’s earnings over its first two days demonstrate that Rajinikanth’s popularity and audience interest in the Jailer franchise remain strong. Industry observers will now be watching closely to see how far the film can go at the box office in the coming days.
