After a long wait and uncertainty, the proposed first-year Honours classes under Dhaka Central University’s seven colleges have finally begun. On Thursday (January 1), nearly four months after the entrance exams, academic activities for the 2024–2025 students resumed simultaneously through classes and orientation meetings.
On-site, orientation programs were arranged for newly admitted students in every department, including Dhaka College. Teachers introduced themselves, explained the syllabus, class routines, and informed students of regular class schedules. Students reported that the initial anxiety and uncertainty had largely subsided.
Nasir Ahmed, a first-year student, said the experience on the first day was positive. “After hearing so much uncertainty for a long time, it feels good to understand the schedule and syllabus. I now have a clear idea of the future,” he said.
The principal of Dhaka College and interim administrator of the proposed Dhaka Central University, Professor A.K.M. Elias, said that while there were initial challenges, the situation is stabilizing. He hopes that with regular classes, the session backlog can be cleared. Regarding first-year exams, he stated that there is sufficient time to complete the syllabus if classes and exams proceed as planned.
In March 2025, the University Grants Commission recommended merging seven government colleges in Dhaka into Dhaka Central University, a policy later approved by the government. The seven colleges include Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College, and Titumir Government College.
With combined efforts from faculty and administration, regular academic activities are expected to normalize soon.
