Hathazari: Main robbery suspect Jahangir arrested in shooting of army personnel

Police have arrested Jahangir Hossain, also known as Prakash (37), in connection with the shooting of an army personnel during a daring robbery at a grocery store in Hathazari, Chittagong. He was caught on Friday night from the West Khillapara area of Bordighirpara under Hathazari Police Station.

Sub-Inspector Rupen Nath of Hathazari Model Police Station confirmed the arrest on Saturday (October 11). The arrested Jahangir is the son of the late Ismail Hossain from Sekander Colony, Ward No. 1, South Pahartali, Chittagong.

According to police, on the night of April 26 this year, a group of masked robbers entered the “Gausia Grocery” shop in Dewan Nagar area, near Hathazari Bus Stand. They held the shop owner, Rashedul Islam, at gunpoint and looted Tk 1.1 million. When the shop owner’s younger brother, army personnel Shahidul Islam (21), tried to intervene, the robbers shot him, leaving him critically injured.

During the investigation, police arrested two individuals who confessed in court that it was Jahangir Hossain who fired the shot. Jahangir had been on the run since then.

OC of Hathazari Model Police Station, Manjur Kader Bhuiya, said, “We had been conducting operations to capture Jahangir for a long time. Finally, on Friday night, we were able to arrest him. He was directly involved in the shooting of the army personnel.”

He added that the arrested suspect has been sent to court, and operations to apprehend the remaining fugitives are ongoing.
