Hasnat Abdullah, who drew attention during the July mass uprising for wearing a “Number 10 jersey,” took oath as a Member of the 13th National Parliament wearing the same jersey. His appearance is being viewed in political circles as carrying a renewed symbolic message.
After 1:20 pm on Tuesday, he took oath as a Member of Parliament in the oath room of the National Parliament Building. Six other elected candidates of the National Citizen Party (NCP) also took oath alongside him. Later, they assumed responsibilities as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
In the 13th National Parliamentary Election, Hasnat Abdullah won from the Cumilla-4 constituency. He contested with the NCP’s party symbol “Shapla Koli” and received support from the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party electoral alliance. He secured victory with 166,583 votes. His nearest rival was Jasim Uddin, a BNP-backed candidate from Gono Odhikar Parishad, who received 49,885 votes with the “Truck” symbol.
At the oath ceremony, Hasnat Abdullah wore the widely discussed bottle-green jersey. The front of the jersey features the logo of the University of Dhaka and the word “English,” indicating his department. The back displays his name “Hasnat” and the number “10.”
Political analysts believe that wearing the same jersey at such a formal moment highlights the continuity of his movement identity and symbolic stance.
