Half of U.S. voters believe that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, according to a recent survey released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University.
The poll shows that this belief is highest among Democratic supporters, with 77 percent agreeing. More than half of independent voters (51 percent) also share this view. However, among Republican supporters, 64 percent believe the allegations of genocide against Israel are not accurate, with only 20 percent agreeing with the claim.
The survey also found that nearly four in six Americans (60 percent) do not want additional U.S. military aid sent to Israel. Since the survey series began in November 2023, this marks the highest level of opposition.
There has also been a shift in sympathy toward Palestinians and Israelis. Thirty-seven percent of U.S. voters said they feel more sympathy for Palestinians, while 36 percent expressed sympathy for Israelis. Since the survey started in December 2001, this is the first time support for Palestinians has surpassed that for Israelis, with sympathy for Israel at its lowest point.
Quinnipiac analyst Tim Malloy said, “Support for Palestinians is increasing, and interest in financially supporting Israel militarily is rapidly declining. At the same time, criticism of the campaign against Gaza is rising sharply.”
The survey was conducted among 1,220 registered voters, with a margin of error of ±3.4 percentage points.
Notably, multiple human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, though Israel denies these allegations. Last year, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a preliminary ruling stating that South Africa could pursue a case against Israel for genocide and that Palestinians have a “legitimate right” to protection from genocide.
Meanwhile, in November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and the late Hamas commander Mohammed Deif for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
