Google’s New Phone Launch Focused More on Glamour Than Technology

Last Wednesday, Google held a live event to unveil its new Pixel 10 smartphone, which turned out to be more of an entertainment show than a tech-focused presentation. The event was hosted by late-night show star Jimmy Fallon, with appearances by celebrities including Stephen Curry, the Jonas Brothers, and podcaster Alex Cooper.

Instead of highlighting technological details, the event was dominated by celebrity hype and excitement. Fallon’s presence and somewhat distracted hosting style overshadowed the tech presentation. For example, he tried to create excitement around the IP68 water-resistance feature, even though it is not new—it has been part of Google Pixel phones since the Pixel 3.

The Pixel 10 smartphone includes AI-powered features designed to assist with photography, call translation, texting, and real-life tasks. However, the format of the event and the celebrity focus did not effectively showcase these innovations.

During the event, Fallon asked questions such as “What does agentic mean?” and “What is a walled garden?” which seemed overly basic for tech-savvy viewers. As a result, the practical benefits of Google’s AI innovations, like the Gemini Assistant and Circle-to-Search features, were not clearly conveyed.

Celebrity clips, such as the Jonas Brothers’ music video, and Fallon’s over-the-top excitement, often gave the event a feel similar to QVC or a home shopping channel. Some authentic moments were created by the presence of photographer Andre D. Wagner and podcaster Cooper.

Analysts say that if Google had focused more on its new AI features and technical innovations, the event would have been more meaningful and compelling for users. Instead, the celebrity hype and entertainment-driven presentation diluted the core technological message.

Google is clearly eager to get its AI-powered smartphone into users’ hands quickly, but this type of show failed to capture the attention of technology enthusiasts.
