The number of apps designed for Apple’s new foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is growing rapidly. More than 100,000 apps compatible with the device’s screen size and foldable design have already been released on the App Store, with thousands of new apps being added every day, Apple has said.
The company disclosed the information on Friday (November 6). Initial reviews of the iPhone Duo had criticised the limited availability of apps specifically designed for the device. Apple, however, says that the limitations in its software and app ecosystem are being addressed quickly.
Among the notable apps recently added or updated for the iPhone Duo are Microsoft Word and Outlook, Zoom, sports apps from the NBA and NHL, and online shopping platforms Etsy and LTK. Several productivity and creative applications, including Goodnotes, Extra and the Halide Mark III camera app, have also joined the list.
Popular apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp had already been compatible with the iPhone Duo’s display.
To take full advantage of the iPhone Duo’s large screen and foldable design, apps need to be specifically optimised for the device. When apps have not yet been adapted, black areas appear along one side of the screen, reducing the usable display space. In some cases, important features are also placed behind additional menus, making them less accessible.
Apple said it had organised more than 50 in-person workshops across 19 cities worldwide to help developers create and update apps for the new device. More than 2,000 app developers have taken part in these sessions, where they were given the opportunity to use the iPhone Duo and improve the design and functionality of their applications.
In a statement, Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, said she was pleased with how quickly developers had adapted their apps to the iPhone Duo. Praising their creativity and innovation, she said Apple expected the pace of updates to increase as more apps became optimised for the device.
Other apps included in the list of applications updated for iOS 27 and adapted to the iPhone Duo include Spotify, CBS, Tubi, BBC iPlayer, Yahoo Fantasy Sports, Facebook Messenger, Google Chat, ChatGPT and Grok.
The list also features Microsoft Copilot, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP Concur, Canva, Substack, The Washington Post, Yahoo News, Google Translate, Strava, MyFitnessPal, Tesla Robotaxi, Priceline, Domino’s, Taco Bell and The Weather Channel.
However, not all the updates announced by Apple have yet become fully available to users. Spotify, for example, still displays black areas along the side of the screen. Even on the iPhone Duo used for review purposes, there was no notification in the App Store indicating that a new version of Spotify was available for download. Nevertheless, Apple’s list suggests that these updates are expected to reach users soon.
Alongside the growing number of compatible apps, demand for the iPhone Duo also appears to be stronger than expected. Although the 256GB model starts at $1,999, initial stocks were exhausted within hours of sales beginning. As a result, delivery estimates for new orders have been pushed back to next year.
During an earnings call this week, Apple said it was difficult to predict when the supply shortage of the iPhone Duo would be resolved. This means that, despite the growing number of apps available for the new device, customers may still have to wait before receiving their phones.
