After ending a long legal battle, Google has settled with video game developer Epic Games. The agreement includes major changes to Play Store commission structures and easier installation of alternative app stores on Android.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Google announced that the dispute with Epic Games has been resolved, allowing Fortnite to return globally to Google Play. Epic can also expand its own Android app marketplace.

New decisions: Google’s service fee for in-app purchases drops from 30% to 20%; for recurring subscriptions, the fee is 10%. Developers using Google’s billing system may pay an additional 5%. Rates apply in the U.S., EEA, and UK; other countries’ rates are market-based. Effective June 30, 2026, in Europe, UK, and U.S.; Australia – September 30; Korea & Japan – by end of 2027.

Another key part is the “Registered App Stores” program, allowing users to install approved alternative app stores outside Play Store more easily. Previously, sideloading faced security warnings raised by Epic. Google requires safety and quality standards for approved stores. Launch pending court approval in the U.S.; other markets follow.

Programs like “Apps Experience Program” and “Google Play Games Level Up” will allow developers to pay 15% commission for new installs, though existing installs remain at 20%.

Epic Games welcomed the settlement. CEO Tim Sweeney said on social media that the changes make Android a more open and competitive platform.

Apple is also in legal battles over app store commissions, with courts ordering external payment links, now under appeal. Analysts say the settlement promotes competition and opportunities for developers.
