Former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team and current chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain has stated that his current contract will expire on February 28, and he does not wish to enter into a new long-term contract.
A source within the cricket board said that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has requested him to continue in a limited capacity for another two to three months. Gazi Ashraf has no objection to this, but it must be for a short duration. No formal decision has yet been made.
Nazmul Abedeen, head of BCB’s cricket operations department, said that his contract will expire at the end of the month. After that, the board’s plans and Gazi Ashraf’s personal position will be considered before making a final decision.
Explaining his stance, Gazi Ashraf said that from the beginning of next year he will be busy with personal commitments and plans to spend a large part of the remaining time this year abroad. For this reason, it is not possible for him to take on long-term responsibilities. However, if necessary, he is willing to assist the board for a limited time. He also mentioned the need to change the culture of holding the same position for an extended period.
It is noteworthy that on February 12, 2024, Gazi Ashraf assumed the role of chief selector under a two-year contract. The board led by then-president Nazmul Hassan appointed him with director-level status and privileges.
