Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi Seriously Injured in Assassination Attempt, Wife Killed

Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi has been seriously injured in an assassination attempt that also resulted in the death of his wife, amid the fifth week of US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

Iranian media reported that on Wednesday, Kharazi’s residence in Tehran was targeted in an airstrike. According to Shargh, Etemad, and Ham-Mihan newspapers, Kharazi was hospitalized in serious condition.

Al Jazeera’s Tehran correspondent Mohammad Val reported: “We have witnessed an assassination attempt against former Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi. The reasons for targeting him are unclear. He is seriously injured, and his wife has died.”

Airstrikes were also reported in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz, while in southern Iran’s Larestan, four people were killed.

Ibrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya central headquarters, stated: “The US and Israel have an incomplete assessment of Iran’s military capabilities. Therefore, Tehran will carry out even stronger, broader, and more destructive strikes.”

US President Donald Trump had threatened to hit Iran “extremely hard” within weeks. Over 2,000 Iranians have been killed in ongoing strikes, 24 Israelis, and 13 US soldiers in the region.

Kharazi had previously indicated that Iran has not closed all diplomatic channels and remains open to indirect negotiations. However, recent US and Israeli actions have made diplomacy nearly impossible.

Kharazi currently serves as head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations and was a former advisor to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials have warned that further assassinations could prompt retaliatory measures against US agencies and tech companies.

During the ongoing US and Israeli military actions, Iranian nuclear scientists, senior security officials Ali Larijani, and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani have been killed.
