Staff Report: PNN
Ferry operations on the Shariatpur–Chandpur route have been temporarily suspended due to dense fog. To prevent possible accidents on the waterway, the decision was implemented from early Tuesday morning by the ferry authorities.
According to sources at the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Narsinghpur Ferry Ghat, ferry operations were suspended from 4:00 am Tuesday. The visibility on the river and surrounding areas had dropped dramatically, and this precautionary measure was taken for safety reasons.
Ikbal Hossain, Deputy Manager of Narsinghpur Ferry Ghat, told the media that dense fog began forming late Monday night, and by early Tuesday, visibility had almost reached zero. He said, “Ferry operations have been temporarily suspended to avoid accidents. However, no ferries were stranded mid-river.”
The ferry authorities stated that operations will resume once the fog clears and visibility returns to normal. Meanwhile, passengers and vehicles heading to Shariatpur and Chandpur were seen waiting at the ferry ghats. According to the authorities, temporary suspension of ferry operations due to dense fog is not uncommon during the winter season.
