The accident occurred late Wednesday night in the Bali Strait. The ferry had departed from Banyuwangi, a port city on Indonesia’s main island of Java, and was headed toward a port in Bali.
In an official statement, the local search and rescue agency in Surabaya reported that the ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, sank approximately 25 minutes after lifting anchor.
So far, authorities have confirmed four fatalities, with 31 people rescued and 30 still missing. The vessel was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles at the time of the disaster.
While the agency has not given a definitive cause, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya later stated that “bad weather” was a likely contributing factor to the tragedy.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams battling rough sea conditions in hopes of locating the missing passengers.
