While Europe remains committed to transitioning to electric vehicles, the timeline may be partially relaxed. The European Commission proposed allowing up to 10% of new car sales after 2035 to include hybrids or other low-emission vehicles, provided manufacturers purchase carbon offsets.

The proposal is part of the broader “Automotive Package” aimed at keeping Europe’s car industry competitive and environmentally friendly. Traditional European automakers welcome the flexibility, citing competition from Tesla and Chinese EV manufacturers.

Critics worry the plan may slow EV adoption and raise costs for consumers. Initiatives like the “Battery Booster,” investing €1.8 billion in local battery supply, aim to support EV infrastructure.

The debate highlights tensions between climate targets and economic realities in Europe’s automotive sector.
