A new debate has emerged over the energy and technology strategies of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and his companies. His firms have long aimed to build a clean energy-based economy, but recent actions have raised questions about whether those goals are shifting.

Tesla previously published several “Master Plans,” which focused on moving away from a fossil-fuel-based economy toward solar and electric energy systems. In the first plan, Musk emphasized transitioning from fossil fuels to a solar-powered system.

However, recent developments show that his AI company xAI is using multiple natural gas-powered turbines to run data centers and is planning to purchase even larger amounts of energy in the future. This has raised criticism that fossil fuel usage is increasing instead of clean energy.

At the same time, reports about SpaceX show a different picture. The company is reportedly using internal transactions to utilize products and technologies from other Musk companies. For example, Tesla electric trucks and battery systems have received large orders, while solar energy usage remains comparatively low.

Reports also say SpaceX is working on the idea of placing data centers in space, where constant sunlight could generate more power. However, experts question the practicality, cost, and feasibility of such technology.

Analysts say space-based data centers are still a very early concept and face major technical and economic challenges, especially in terms of equipment protection, maintenance, and high costs.

Meanwhile, the rapid expansion of global AI technology is significantly increasing electricity demand. According to Musk, AI-based computing in the future may require massive energy resources, which could put pressure on existing terrestrial power systems.

Critics argue that there is still huge untapped potential in solar and other renewable energy sources on Earth, and these should be used more effectively alongside technological development.

Overall, a renewed debate has emerged over Musk’s energy and technology strategy—whether he is still fully committed to clean energy or whether practical needs have shifted his position.
