Elon Musk’s X and XAI File Lawsuit Against Apple and OpenAI

Elon Musk’s social media platform X and the artificial intelligence company XAI on Monday filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI. The lawsuit alleges that both companies are colluding to limit competition.

The complaint states, “In a strong effort to maintain smartphone dominance, Apple has partnered with a company that benefits the most from obstructing competition and innovation in artificial intelligence: OpenAI, which has monopolized the generative AI chatbot market.” It also notes that Apple and OpenAI have partnered to integrate ChatGPT into Apple’s system.

This lawsuit is part of a long-standing dispute between Musk and OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman. Musk, who was previously a co-founder and vice-chair of OpenAI, has also filed a case to prevent OpenAI’s transition into a for-profit entity. Additionally, Musk made an unexpected proposal to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion, which the company rejected.

Earlier this month, Musk claimed on X, “Without OpenAI, no AI company can reach the top of the App Store.”

Apple and OpenAI announced their partnership in June, with the joint features expected to be available to users in December.
