After the Iranian government ordered a nationwide internet blackout, technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has launched his satellite-based internet service, Starlink, to restore connectivity in the country. On Saturday morning, Musk briefly announced on the social media platform X, writing, “The beams are on,” signaling that the service is now operational.
The Iranian government shut down the internet across the country on Friday, citing security reasons. According to a statement from the Ministry of Communications, this step was taken amid ongoing unstable conditions. However, analysts suggest that the government’s decision was driven by fears of nationwide protests spreading following recent Israeli attacks.
The Washington Times reported that the internet blackout left the Iranian population largely cut off from international news and information. In response, popular U.S. talk show host Mark Levin called on Elon Musk to activate Starlink services to provide an alternative connection to the Iranian people. Levin stated, “This will drive the last nail in the coffin of Iran’s repression.”
Shortly after Levin’s appeal, Musk announced the resumption of internet access in Iran via Starlink. Many have welcomed this move, viewing it as a blend of technology and human rights support.
Starlink is a project owned by Musk’s SpaceX, which uses thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide high-speed internet worldwide, especially in remote or connectivity-challenged regions.
Experts believe that this initiative to restore internet in Iran could introduce a new dimension to political and social movements in the country. The key question now is how the government will respond to this alternative connectivity.
