In the 13th National Parliament, the responsibility of opposition leadership has been assumed by Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. On Tuesday (February 17), following the swearing-in of Members of Parliament, he was nominated as Leader of the Opposition at a parliamentary party meeting.
Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, elected from Cumilla-11 (Chouddagram) constituency and Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, has been appointed Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
Additionally, Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), will serve as Chief Whip of the opposition.
Md. Abdul Karim, Ameer of Jamaat in Gaibandha district and MP from Gaibandha-2 constituency, confirmed the matter after attending the meeting. Party sources said that the 11-party alliance will soon issue a joint press release announcing the decision.
It is reported that the oath-taking ceremony was completed from morning until noon. First, Jamaat MPs took the oath, followed by NCP MPs. At the same time, members of the 11-party alliance also completed the oath of the Constitutional Reform Council.
Politicians and analysts believe that the new opposition leadership will play an important role in maintaining coordination and stability in parliamentary proceedings.
