DESCO’s Initiative: Discussion Meeting with Mosque Committees on ‘Efficient Electricity Usage’

A discussion meeting on ‘Efficient Electricity Usage’ organized by Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO) was held on Thursday at a convention hall in the capital. Imams, muezzins, and representatives of mosque committees from areas under DESCO’s jurisdiction attended the meeting.

Muhammad Rafiqul Islam, Chairman of DESCO’s Board and Secretary of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Authority, spoke as the chief guest. He said, “We depend on fossil fuels, which pose environmental risks. We must focus on renewable energy. We seek everyone’s cooperation to install solar panels on the roofs of all mosques and madrasas under DESCO to generate electricity.”

He further added, “Imams and khutbah deliverers are influential figures in society. If they raise awareness about saving electricity during Friday sermons and other occasions, it will have a positive impact on society and help reduce electricity wastage.”

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Imam of Banani Central Jame Mosque, welcomed this initiative, saying it is the first of its kind. Imam Md. Zahidul Islam from Rupnagar Residential Area and representatives from mosques in Uttara West Turag proposed ideas to reduce electricity bills.

Brigadier General Shamim Ahmed NDC (Retd.), Managing Director of DESCO, attended the event and urged everyone to avoid electricity wastage by quoting verses from the Holy Quran. He also presented a briefing on measures to save electricity and appreciated DESCO officials and staff for reducing system losses.

Although the government provides substantial subsidies to the power sector, unwanted electricity wastage is increasing the government’s additional expenses. Through this discussion meeting, DESCO aims to raise public awareness about saving electricity and promoting renewable energy.
