A discussion titled “Referendum and Ordinance: Role of Student Leadership” was held under the initiative of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). The event took place on Wednesday (13 April) afternoon at DUCSU premises, where leaders from various student organizations demanded immediate implementation of the referendum results.

DUCSU Vice President Sadiq Kayem chaired the session. Speakers said that if the public mandate given through the referendum is ignored, students will be forced to launch protests again.

The speakers emphasized implementation of the “July Charter” and alleged that political parties are deviating from their promises after coming to power. According to them, immediate reform measures are necessary to fulfill public expectations.

Speakers included Sibghatullah Sibgha, Riazul Islam, Mazharul Islam, Nazmul Hasan, Rayhan Ali, Mohammad Prince, Saiful Islam, Abdul Aziz, and Khairul Ahsan Marjan, among others.

They said referendums have historically played an important role in reflecting people’s direct opinions, and delays in implementing such decisions are unacceptable. They warned that ignoring public opinion would go against democratic values.

Speakers also compared the current situation with past political crises and said that the movement for structural change in the state must be implemented to build a new Bangladesh.

DUCSU leaders also said that students have always played a key role in major national changes and will continue to do so in the future if necessary.
