A new record has been set in the global domain market by Kris Marszalek, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Crypto.com. He has purchased the domain name AI.com for approximately USD 70 million, making it the most expensive domain name ever sold. The information was reported by the Financial Times. The entire amount was paid using digital currency. The identity of the seller has not been disclosed.

This purchase has broken all previous records. Earlier, the most expensive domain sale was CarInsurance.com, which was sold for nearly USD 50 million in 2010. Other high-value domain sales include VacationRentals.com, Voice.com, and several others.

Kris Marszalek stated that the domain will be officially launched during the popular U.S. sporting event, the Super Bowl. Through this new website, there are plans to introduce a personal AI-based assistant service for general users. This service will enable messaging, assistance with using various apps, and activities such as stock market trading.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Marszalek said,“In the long term—looking ahead 10 to 20 years—artificial intelligence will become one of the biggest technological transformations of our lives.” According to him, the AI.com domain was purchased with this future potential in mind. Domain broker Larry Fisher, who mediated the sale, said that there is no alternative to such a domain. In his words,“When an asset like AI.com comes up for sale, there is no guarantee that such an opportunity will ever come again.”

However, doubts remain as to whether such an expensive domain will ultimately generate a return on investment. In the past, domains such as Voice.com, PrivateJet.com, and Sex.com were sold for millions of dollars, but not all achieved the expected commercial success.

Nevertheless, such costly investments are not new for Kris Marszalek. Previously, he purchased the Crypto.com domain and also acquired naming rights to a massive sports stadium at a cost of approximately USD 700 million. Analysts believe that these decisions are driven by a strategy to create long-term impact in technology and branding.
