On the day after taking the oath, the new State Minister for Sports, Aminul Haque, clarified his plans for the country’s sports sector. After assuming responsibility on Tuesday afternoon, he returned directly to his residence in Mirpur Pallabi instead of visiting the Secretariat. Later, during interactions with journalists, he highlighted various aspects of the sports sector.

The minister stated that while the sports ministry had so far focused mainly on infrastructure development, he intends to directly oversee improvements in the quality of sports. He emphasized that priority will be given to improving training, competition, and the environment for athletes, rather than just constructing facilities.

Regarding allegations of irregularities and corruption in sports, he stated his firm stance, emphasizing a “zero-tolerance” policy. He asserted that efforts will be made to curb misconduct.

He also spoke about Bangladesh’s two experienced national cricketers, Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, describing them as “legendary” and expressing a desire to see them return to the field once administrative issues are resolved.

On international participation, he expressed regret over Bangladesh’s absence from certain events, such as the T20 World Cup, which he considers an organizational failure. He noted that timely discussions and coordination could have facilitated participation in major tournaments.

The minister expressed a desire to strengthen sports relations with India and support regular sports exchanges between the two countries.

He also addressed future prospects for athletes after retirement, noting plans to create employment opportunities to prevent uncertainty. Former athletes may be employed in government and private institutions or appointed as sports teachers in educational institutions.

Regarding controversies over press access in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), he stated that journalists should be able to work in stadiums without obstruction and that instructions have been given to ensure this. He emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation.

In summary, Aminul Haque expressed his determination to treat the sports sector as “one family.” He believes that through good governance, coordination, and transparency, sports can become a force for positive change in the country.
