Nine students at Chittagong University have been on a 48-hour hunger strike demanding the fulfillment of seven specific demands. The students are carrying out the protest as part of a rights-awareness movement. Due to the prolonged strike, 3 out of the 9 students have fallen ill and are receiving treatment at the university medical center.
The hunger strike began on Wednesday, 10 September at 1 p.m. in front of the university Proctor’s Office. Students from the Bangla, Music, English, Sports Science, and Marketing departments are participating in the protest, alongside various leftist organizations and general students.
The seven-point demand by the students includes:
Resignation of the Proctorial Body
Full disclosure of the list of injured students
Provision of quality housing for non-residential students with ensured safety
Effective measures to recover belongings of evicted students
Ensuring security and holding responsible individuals accountable
Formation of an inclusive coordination committee
Publication and implementation of the campus roadmap
Chittagong University medical officer Dr. Abul Kashem warned: “If the students do not end the hunger strike now, there could be loss of life. Their condition is gradually deteriorating.”
University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan stated that although the administration discussed the issue with students for nearly two hours yesterday, the students did not end the strike. A formal meeting is scheduled for Sunday to discuss their demands.
The hunger-striking students said: “We will continue the hunger strike until our demands are fully met. If necessary, we are ready to sacrifice our lives.”
