Assistant Professor Jannatul Ferdous Dies During JAKSU Vote Counting; University in Mourning

Assistant Professor Jannatul Ferdous Moumita of the Department of Fine Arts at Jahangirnagar University suddenly fell ill and died while participating in the vote counting of the Central Student Council (JAKSU) elections. This tragic incident occurred just before 8 a.m. on Friday at the university’s Senate building.

She was immediately taken to Enam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Jannatul Ferdous was serving as the polling officer for Preetilota Hall in the election.

Upon hearing the news, a shadow of grief fell over the election officials present in the vote counting room, and some broke down in tears. Election Commissioner Rezwana Karim announced via microphone: “In such circumstances, we will pray, but we must also continue our duties.”

University sources stated that she had returned home after the previous day’s voting and did not participate in any nighttime election activities. On Friday morning, she came to the Senate building to fulfill her duties and fell ill at 8:15 a.m.

Jannatul Ferdous completed her BFA and MFA from Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Fine Arts in 2016 and 2018, respectively. At the time of her death, she was serving as a lecturer in the department. Her research focused on painting, Muslim art, and art history.

Assistant Proctor Shamima Nasrin Jolly said that although she was rushed to the hospital, her life could not be saved. Her death has cast deep grief among university colleagues and students.
