In the middle of Ramadan, prices of broiler and Sonali chickens have increased again in the capital’s markets. The price of broiler chicken has risen by about 30 taka per kilogram, approaching 200 taka per kg. At the same time, prices of sugar, polao rice, and some spices have also increased. However, prices of some vegetables commonly used for iftar have brought slight relief.

A visit to Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Town Hall Market, and Karwan Bazar on Thursday showed that broiler chicken is being sold at 190–200 taka per kg, whereas just a week ago it was 160–170 taka. Sonali chicken prices have also increased to 300–330 taka per kg, compared to 270–300 taka last week.

Vendors say that poultry deaths increased during the winter season, reducing supply. At the same time, demand has risen during Ramadan, pushing prices higher. However, the egg market remains relatively stable, with eggs selling at 100–110 taka per dozen.

The sugar market has also seen some instability. Loose sugar is selling for 100 taka per kg, and packaged sugar for 105 taka, about 10 taka higher than a few weeks ago. In the wholesale market, the price of a 50-kg sack has increased by around 300 taka.

Polao rice prices have also put additional pressure on consumers. Loose Chinigura rice is selling at 140–150 taka per kg, while packaged versions cost 175–185 taka depending on the brand. These prices have increased significantly compared to a month ago. However, prices of regular rice have remained almost unchanged for the past two weeks.

Ahead of Eid, the spice market is also showing rising trends. The price of dried plums (alubokhara) has increased by about 250 taka per kg, reaching 1,000 taka. The price of cumin and raisins has increased by about 40 taka per kg, while almonds and cashew nuts have risen by about 100 taka. Meanwhile, shortages of bottled soybean oil have been observed in many shops.

However, the vegetable market has brought some relief. The price of lemons, which had surged at the beginning of Ramadan, has now dropped to 40–80 taka per four pieces. Prices of cucumber, eggplant, and green chili have also decreased by around 20 taka per kg. Currently, cucumbers are selling for 80–100 taka, eggplants 60–80 taka, and green chilies 120–140 taka. Onion prices have also dropped by 10–15 taka per kg, now selling for 40–45 taka.

Despite these changes, fluctuations in the prices of essential commodities have created dissatisfaction among lower- and middle-income consumers. Many say that due to high prices of fish and beef, chicken had been their main reliance. But as chicken prices continue to rise repeatedly, it is becoming difficult to manage household expenses.
