Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had been on an unstoppable run, securing four trophies this season including the Champions League, and bulldozing past Real Madrid in the Club World Cup semi-finals to reach the final. They were widely considered the favorites for the title. However, in the decisive championship match, PSG proved no match for Chelsea. The English Premier League club clinched the Club World Cup crown by defeating them 3-0.
Cole Palmer was the hero for Chelsea in the final, scoring a brace and assisting the remaining goal. Chelsea's goalkeeper, Robert Sánchez, also played a crucial role, making six fantastic saves in the final, four of which were almost certain goals. Sánchez is being highly praised for his superb performance between the posts.
All goals of the match came in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Palmer put Chelsea ahead with a low left-footed shot after receiving the ball from a teammate. Just eight minutes later, the attacking midfielder doubled the lead, again finding the net with a left-footed shot after bypassing an opponent's defender. In the 43rd minute, João Pedro made it 3-0, scoring from a pass by Palmer. This young Brazilian striker, who recently joined Chelsea, scored a total of 3 goals in the Club World Cup tournament.
PSG, who had conceded only one goal in their previous six matches of the tournament while scoring 16, failed to put up a fight against Chelsea in the final. With a blunt attack and shaky defense, the club from the French capital had to return with disappointment, despite being so close to the trophy.
Chelsea concluded their season with two trophies after this Club World Cup victory. Earlier in May, they had won the UEFA Conference League title, defeating Real Betis 4-1 in the final. Under Enzo Maresca's coaching, Chelsea seems to be sending a clear message of resurgence after a period of continuous underperformance.
