The winter chill has intensified in Naogaon, a northern border district. On Wednesday (7 January), the district recorded the lowest temperature in the country. According to the Department of Meteorology, the minimum temperature in Badalgachhi Upazila, Naogaon, fell to 6.7 degrees Celsius, the lowest of the current season.
Due to the sudden drop in temperature, the most affected are the homeless and low-income people. Without adequate winter clothing, they are struggling to maintain their normal lives in the freezing cold. Early morning, agricultural laborers, day laborers, and rickshaw pullers faced severe hardship.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that Naogaon recorded the country’s lowest temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the lowest of the current winter season. According to the Badalgachhi Agriculture and Weather Observation Center, the minimum temperature in the district was 11 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Within a day, it fell by almost four and a half degrees. The drop in temperature combined with northern icy winds increased the perception of cold. During the day, sunlight was minimal, and the surroundings remained covered in dense fog. Low visibility forced vehicles to use headlights while moving.
Mohammad Hamidul Haque, senior observer at Badalgachhi Agriculture and Weather Observation Center, said, “Due to the presence of clouds and wind, the intensity of the cold is being strongly felt. The current temperature is classified within a moderate cold wave.”
According to weather experts, if the minimum temperature falls between 6.1 and 8 degrees Celsius, it is considered a moderate cold wave. If the cold wave continues in Naogaon, the intensity of the winter may increase further.
