At least 10 people were injured in a balloon explosion during the mass gathering organized to mark the ‘July Uprising Day 2025’ at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital. The incident occurred on Tuesday (August 5) in the afternoon. After receiving initial treatment, several of the injured were taken to various hospitals in Dhaka.

According to eyewitnesses, a helium-filled balloon suddenly exploded while being released around midday. The loud blast triggered panic in the surrounding area. At least 10 individuals who were near the balloon sustained injuries from flying debris and fire.

A member of the organizing committee present at the scene said,
“The balloon was symbolically launched to commemorate the exact moment—2:25 PM on August 5 last year—when ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled. A ‘helicopter-shaped balloon’ was released as a symbolic representation of that moment. Unfortunately, it exploded.”

The injured were promptly rescued and given first aid. Some reportedly suffered minor burns on their faces and hands. However, organizers confirmed that none of the injuries are critical.

Following the incident, security was tightened and all remaining balloons were removed from the venue. The organizers stated that an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Despite the balloon incident, the crowd’s enthusiasm and participation remained unaffected. At 5 PM, the event’s main segment commenced with Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus reading the ‘July Declaration’.
