Prices of various varieties of aromatic rice have increased sharply in Bangladesh, with traders reporting a rise of Tk 60 to Tk 80 per kilogram over the past month.
Business representatives claim that increased exports have created pressure on domestic supply, leading to the price hike.
However, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has rejected claims of an actual shortage, saying some traders may have created an artificial crisis to increase profits.
Market inspections in Dhaka showed that loose polao rice, which was previously sold at around Tk 160 per kilogram, is now selling between Tk 170 and Tk 200 depending on quality and variety.
Meanwhile, packaged aromatic rice prices have remained relatively stable, with different brands selling at around Tk 210 per kilogram.
Retailers said increased exports of aromatic rice have reduced supply pressure in local markets. According to them, the impact first appeared in wholesale markets before reaching consumers.
Wholesale traders said demand for Chinigura rice among Bangladeshis living abroad has increased significantly, resulting in higher exports.
However, some traders have also alleged that certain businesses are stockpiling rice to take advantage of the situation.
CAB President AHM Shafiquzzaman said there is no actual shortage of aromatic rice in the country.
He said authorities should increase monitoring of supply chains, storage facilities, and market operations if prices continue rising despite adequate availability.
According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh approved exports of 23,959 tonnes of aromatic rice in two phases during the 2025-26 fiscal year.
While traders blame increased exports for the price surge, consumer groups argue that actual supply and stock information must be verified before determining the real cause.
The continuous rise in aromatic rice prices has created concern among consumers, especially because these varieties are widely used in polao, biryani, and festive meals.
