All detainees have been removed from the controversial immigration detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed.

Officials said the decision was taken due to the start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The facility, located in a former airbase in the Big Cypress National Preserve, was highly controversial since its opening in 2025.

Authorities had described the surrounding wetlands, alligators, and pythons as natural barriers to prevent escape.

However, human rights groups and indigenous communities strongly opposed the center, citing environmental and cultural concerns.

Legal activists also raised issues regarding healthcare access and legal representation for detainees.

Authorities have not disclosed where the detainees were transferred.
