The film Yellow Letters won the Best Film award in the competition section of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival. Directed by Ilker Catak, the film received the festival’s highest honor, the Golden Bear.

The story begins with a depiction of an ordinary family life, which gradually evolves into a deep exploration of political pressure, mental crises, and social realities.

The film centers around Deria, a theater worker, portrayed by Ozgü Namal. Her silent presence on stage at the beginning of the film represents a form of protest, signaling a reality where art and poetry can sometimes become politically vulnerable.

Deria’s husband Aziz is portrayed by Tansu Bicer. Both are involved in theater, and their family life is filled with books, dreams, and creativity. However, an unexpected incident disrupts their peaceful life.

The film also depicts various aspects of Turkey’s political reality, such as job loss, economic uncertainty, and social pressure. In this situation, Deria struggles to maintain her dignity and beliefs, while Aziz searches for ways to adapt to reality.

Their teenage daughter Ezgi represents the new generation, showing how political instability not only affects the present but also shapes the minds of future generations.

The film’s cinematography was done by Judith Kaufmann. Through the use of doors, windows, confined spaces, and lighting, she powerfully captures the characters’ mental confinement and stress.

The screenplay was written by director Ilker Catak along with Ayda Meryem Catak and Enis Kosepen.

This award marks the first time in nearly two decades that Turkey has received the Best Film honor at the Berlin Film Festival. Previously, Fatih Akin’s Head-On had received the same award.

Critics believe that Yellow Letters delivers a strong message by portraying the complex connection between personal relationships and political reality, showing that questions of personal dignity and freedom can become the greatest form of resistance.
