Often overlooked by science, the period between ages six and twelve, known as 'middle childhood,' is a crucial transitional phase where children prepare for adolescence. Scientists are increasingly interested in understanding what goes on in their minds during this time and how to navigate it.
In German-speaking countries, there's a fascinating term for the sudden moodiness and aggressive behavior seen in six-year-olds: Wackelzahnpubertät, literally meaning "wobbly-tooth puberty." According to the German magazine 'Wunderkind,' "aggressive behavior, rebellious activism, and deep sadness are typical characteristics of this age."
One author recounted his first small act of rebellion around age six. After feeling shy and left out at a birthday party, he returned home in a foul mood. When his mother asked him to do something, he snapped, "It's alright for you, lazing about, while I had to go to that party!" His mother was left speechless by this unexpected outburst.
Experts say that aggressive behavior, rebelliousness, and deep sadness are normal manifestations during this age. Often, poor academic results can lead children to feel mentally broken or even misguided by despair. It's crucial for parents to be aware of these changes so they can provide the right support during this turbulent period.
