Dhaka: Bangladesh has received special benefits regarding U.S. tariffs, according to Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the Caretaker Government.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion titled “Bangladesh’s Position and Challenges on U.S. Tariff Issues” on Saturday (23 August), he said that Bangladesh directly benefited from U.S. tariffs due to Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s personal connections in the United States. From the beginning, the Caretaker Government was confident about reducing tariffs to 20 percent.

The Press Secretary added, “Efforts will continue to further reduce tariffs, and relations with the United States will improve, which will help boost exports.” He also noted that the influence of other international markets was considered during the negotiations.

Initially, the U.S. had imposed a 35 percent retaliatory tariff on Bangladeshi products, which was later reduced to 20 percent on 31 July.
