Citing national security risks, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned the sale of all foreign-made drones in the United States. The new rule, announced on Monday, allows Americans to continue using foreign drones purchased previously.

The FCC explained that drone technology in the hands of criminal networks, hostile foreign powers, or terrorist groups poses serious internal security threats. Consequently, the agency updated its “Covered List” to include all foreign-manufactured drones and critical components.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr welcomed the decision, calling it crucial for national security under President Trump’s leadership. He emphasized that foreign drones and components pose unacceptable risks. The FCC plans to collaborate with domestic drone manufacturers to strengthen the U.S. drone industry.

The ban will affect multiple international companies, with Chinese drone manufacturer DJI likely impacted the most. DJI dominates the global drone market and is popular among U.S. consumers.

DJI expressed disappointment, stating the move was unsatisfactory and lacked transparency regarding the basis for the decision. The company remains committed to operating in the U.S. market and promotes an open, competitive market that benefits American consumers. DJI asserts that its drones are highly reliable, as verified by long-term government and independent research.

Analysts note that this measure continues Trump administration policies aimed at increasing domestic drone production and securing supply chains from foreign influence, following an executive order issued in June.
