In Gomastapur Upazila of Chapainawabganj, two female students of Shefali Hafizia Women’s Madrasa at Dobar Mor in Radhanagar Union mysteriously died on Friday night (15 August).
The deceased are Jamila Khatun (10), daughter of Saibur Rahman from Begpur village, and Tania Akter Nishi (12), daughter of Tariqul Islam from Lebudanga village. According to local sources, 13 students had dinner and went to sleep around 11 PM on Friday. Around 2:30 AM, Jamila and Tania suddenly fell ill, complaining of vomiting and stomach pain.
They were immediately taken to Gomastapur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead. Medical Officer Abdul Alim stated that the students were brought to the hospital around 3:30 AM. Jamila died before reaching the hospital, while Tania passed away upon arrival. Tania had marks on her feet, and Jamila had yellowish marks on her body. It is suspected that they might have been bitten by a snake or some other poisonous creature, but the exact cause will be determined after autopsy.
Madrasa Director Ashraf Ali said that all 13 students slept together at night, and when the two became ill early in the morning, they were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Gomastapur Police Officer-in-Charge Wadud Alam confirmed that the two students started vomiting while at the madrasa around midnight. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently ongoing.
