US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States is considering strict action regarding the suppression of anti-government protests in Iran. Washington is reportedly discussing multiple strong options, including military intervention.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One late Sunday night, Trump said US military and civilian policymakers are closely monitoring the situation. He stated, “We are taking this very seriously. The military is reviewing the situation, and we are also considering strong options. A decision will be made soon.”
Trump also claimed that following the threat of US military action, Iranian leaders have shown interest in negotiating with Washington, and preparations for a meeting are underway. However, he cautioned that the United States may have to act before negotiations begin.
Tehran has not immediately responded. Previously, Iranian leaders had clearly warned against military intervention. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that any attack on Iran would make all US bases and naval assets in Israel and the Middle East legitimate targets.
The protests began on December 28 when shopkeepers in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar closed their stores in response to rising currency value losses. The protests quickly spread nationwide. Initially focused on economic issues, the protests expanded to target the ruling religious establishment.
According to state media, at least 109 security personnel have been killed in ongoing violence. However, foreign-based opposition organizations claim the number is higher, including many protesters. The government has shut down internet access nationwide for over three days to control the situation, drawing criticism from human rights organizations.
Trump mentioned that he plans to speak with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk about the possibility of satellite internet services in Iran. He also reiterated aggressive stances regarding Venezuela and Greenland, assuring Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado of protection for foreign oil investments, and indicating that the United States may take action regarding Greenland’s territorial control if necessary.
