Poipet, known as a Thailand-Cambodia land port and a casino-centric city, was reportedly hit by two bombs at around 11:00 AM local time on Thursday. Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior said at least four casinos were damaged, where mostly Thai citizens visit to gamble.
Recent clashes have caused significant casualties and displacement, with at least 21 dead in Thailand and 17 in Cambodia. Around 800,000 people have fled their homes due to insecurity. The Thai government stated that 5–6 thousand Thai citizens are currently trapped in Poipet due to border closures. Cambodia said the border was closed to ensure civilian safety but air travel is allowed for those wishing to leave.
Previous attempts at a ceasefire mediated by the U.S., China, and Malaysia in July had temporarily halted conflict, but the agreement quickly broke down. U.S. President Donald Trump recently called for renewed ceasefire efforts, which Thailand has rejected. Daily clashes involve artillery, tanks, drones, and aircraft.
The long-standing dispute originates from colonial-era boundary demarcation along an 800 km border and competing ownership claims over ancient temple areas. China has announced sending a special envoy to mediate peace. Diplomats hope this “shuttle diplomacy” may help reduce hostilities.
