Tension Erupts in Bhanga, Faridpur Over Boundary Redrawing and Police Cases; Fire and Vandalism at Upazila Office

A tense situation erupted in Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur, on Sunday (September 15) around midday, in protest against the redrawing of parliamentary constituency boundaries and cases filed by the police. Protesters attacked the Bhanga Upazila Parishad and police station, causing extensive damage, and set fire to the Bhanga Officers’ Club.

Locals reported that when a police team tried to control the protesters, they were chased by the crowd and took shelter in the Model Mosque. During the unrest, the police station was besieged, police vehicles were vandalized, and bricks and stones were thrown at an APC of the army.

Roadblocks that had been in place since early morning resumed around 10:30 AM. Law enforcement tried to restore traffic, resulting in chase-and-counter-chase incidents.

After 1:00 PM, thousands of people from various unions in the upazila launched coordinated attacks, vandalizing multiple facilities.

Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rokibuzzaman stated that the situation is being brought under control. Upazila Executive Officer Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed that they are in a safe location and that no one has been physically harmed, though parts of the UNO office were vandalized and set on fire.
