International Desk | PNN:
Authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab province have issued new evacuation orders for low-lying areas due to severe flooding. Local administration considers this the largest flood in recent history.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department stated on social media platform X on Monday that rainfall continues across the country. Another strong monsoon flow could bring heavy rains to the southern regions, which may escalate into a severe situation within the next two days.
People living near the Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers have already been instructed to evacuate. Kamal Haidar, a reporter for Al Jazeera from Multan, said the situation is getting out of control. Nearly 500,000 people in the Jalalpur Pirwala area are stranded by floodwaters, with many seeking refuge on rooftops.
He added, “There aren’t enough boats to rescue so many people. Efforts are being made to rescue them by helicopter, but bad weather is hampering operations.”
Continuous rainfall has submerged numerous villages and homes. In addition, crops have been extensively damaged, affecting agricultural land.
In the Multan region, located between the Sutlej and Chenab rivers, at least three embankments have broken, flooding many surrounding villages. People are running in all directions to save their lives.
