Very few teams in world football have won back-to-back World Cups. So far, only two countries—Italy and Brazil—have achieved this rare feat. In the 2026 World Cup, the current world champions Argentina have the chance to join that list.

After winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Argentina is now preparing for a new mission. Under coach Lionel Scaloni, the team is again considered one of the favorites. If they retain the title, Argentina will become the third country after Italy and Brazil to win consecutive World Cups.

France won the 2018 World Cup and came close to defending their title in 2022 but lost to Argentina in a dramatic penalty shootout final.

Scaloni does not consider expectations a pressure. He believes opponents will now treat Argentina differently as reigning champions. However, he also says nothing is guaranteed in football. He remains calm and confident that the team is ready.

Italy was the first team to achieve back-to-back World Cup titles in 1934 and 1938 under coach Vittorio Pozzo.

Brazil later achieved the same feat, winning in 1958 with Pelé and defending the title in 1962 with Garrincha leading the team.

Now Argentina stands in front of history. Lionel Messi and his team aim to prove their dominance again. However, Scaloni emphasizes taking one step at a time as every match in the World Cup is difficult.
