With only a few weeks left before the World Cup, a new concern has emerged in the Argentina camp: Lionel Messi. Inter Miami has stated that medical tests revealed muscular fatigue in the hamstring of the Argentine captain’s left leg.

Messi felt discomfort during a high-scoring match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday. In the 73rd minute, he signaled for a substitution after feeling pain in the back of his left leg. Although he was seen walking normally after leaving the field, fans felt some relief.

On Monday, Inter Miami said in a statement that after additional medical tests, it appears Messi’s hamstring has developed muscle fatigue due to excessive strain. However, the club has not yet confirmed how long he will be out of action.

The club added that his return schedule will depend on the progress of recovery.

This situation has naturally raised concerns within the Argentina national football team, as the reigning world champions prepare to defend their title in the World Cup starting on June 11. Argentina’s first match in the joint tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be on June 16 in Kansas City against Algeria.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the 38-year-old forward has been managing his fitness carefully due to a busy schedule. The club has also rested him in several matches. Major League Soccer is currently on break due to the World Cup.

After leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Messi is expected to lead the team once again. The upcoming tournament may become his sixth World Cup appearance, setting a new record in international football.

Argentina will announce its final World Cup squad next week. Before that, they will face Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9 in friendly matches.
