Staff Report: PNN
In the first five months (July–November) of the 2025–26 fiscal year, the government faced a significant shortfall in customs and tax revenue collection. According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), revenue collection fell BDT 24,047 crore below the target.

Revenue targets were set at BDT 1,73,023 crore, but actual collections amounted to BDT 1,48,976 crore. The shortfall occurred across import duties, VAT, and income tax, with the largest deficit in income tax collection.

The total NBR revenue target for the fiscal year is BDT 4,99,000 crore, but the early shortfall has raised concerns. Officials attribute the lag to sluggish business and import activities, but expect improved collection in the latter half of the fiscal year.
